How does turbulent political situations in different countries – and the ensuing unstability – affect leadership at the state level and within the public sector? This timely question will be discussed in this workshop, where scholars from the UK and Denmark will share perspectives and insights, emphasising the specific leadership challenges caused, inter alia, by the political situations in their countries of specialisation. This will be followed by a discussion on the broad implications of the turbulent political times for public leadership as well as questions from the audience.

LOCAL SOLUTIONS AND CREDIBLE LEADERSHIP IN A TURBULENT POLITICAL SITUATION (IN ENGLISH) ROOM: JEPPE VONTILLIUS AUDITORIET (1252-310)
FRIDAY MAY 24 AT 15.00-16.30

How do we sustain and strengthen trust in political and administrative leadership in an era of Trump, Brexit, the Yellow Vest Movement and general distrust in elites? And how can front line managers in the public sector be trusted and stay credible in such an era? This workshop discusses whether the solutions can be found in the realm of local politics and administration and not with the political and administrative elites on the national level. More specifically, we discuss the implications of this development for local politics and administration and how local leadership can help deal with these challenges. The workshop is organised as a mixture of short presentations, questions to presenters, and the sharing of relevant real world experiences by the workshop participants (audience).

TRACK 3:
DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT (IN ENGLISH)
ROOM: SAMFUNDSMEDICINSK AUDITORIUM (1262-101)
FRIDAY MAY 24 AT 15.00-16.30

The workforce in both public and private organisations has become increasingly diverse due to globalization, increased migration, and labour market participation of minority groups. This creates opportunities to improve interactions with diverse citizens and customers and thus improve outcomes for disadvantaged groups and gain legitimacy. Still, this does not happen without leadership. Diversity management can enable a work environment in which there is a shared openness to differences, valuing these, and utilizing differences to inform work practices and decision-making processes. This type of inclusiveness becomes more and more important when the workforce becomes more diverse, and a key question is how leadership can improve the management of diversity and inclusiveness. Professor Sandra Groeneveld from Leiden University is a world leading expert on diversity management in public organisations, while Lisbeth Odgaard Madsen from Potential Company brings along numerous concrete diversity management cases from within Danish and international private sector companies. In addition to general insights about diversity management, we will discuss similarities and differences between creating inclusiveness in environments where new markets and growth (and therefore the ability to open new business areas) play major roles compared to public organisations with politicians and citizens as the most important stakeholders.
